We absolutely love Tai O! It had been so long that I couldn't even remember the last time I visited, so combining it with a morning trip to the Big Buddha was the perfect choice. We picked the absolute right day to go! To get there, we took Bus #21 from the terminal right outside Ngong Ping Village. After just missing the 12:20 p.m. bus, we decided to have lunch at Ngong Ping Village and caught the next one at 1:20 p.m. (Note: the bus only departs every 45 to 60 minutes on weekdays). The scenic ride down the mountain took only about 15 to 17 minutes to reach the Tai O coastal terminal. Be prepared for a temperature change! It was quite hot in Tai O compared to the Big Buddha, which was nice and cool in the morning. This is likely because the village sits at sea level where the heat gets trapped by the surrounding mountains. Once we arrived, we started with the Pink Dolphin watching boat tour to explore the village from the water, and then spent the rest of the afternoon walking around. Tai O is truly a paradise for street snacks and local seafood. We tried the delicious giant curry fish balls, fish siu mai, and mixed-flavor egg waffles. They are absolute must-tries! Highly recommend adding this to your Lantau Island itinerary.

Tai O Fishing Village is one of the few places that still sparkles with old-world charm. People living there have preserved their traditional way of life, much like it was hundreds of years ago. It felt like we traveled back hundreds of years in time. The stilt houses over the water are very unique, and every scene is picturesque. You will see open kitchens facing the water and clothes hanging on lines. The markets are packed with open stalls that sell dried seafood and other goods. There are a few restaurants and shops too. You can access this tourist attraction by public transportation. Hong Kong is a place where you can really utilize the public transportation system. It’s convenient and very safe. We were lucky enough to have visited on a sunny day. It wasn’t busy, so we got to slowly comb through every alley of the whole village. The boat ride is a must! You get to see the waterfront, even all the way toward the bridge to Macau. The water is light green, combined with the colorful boats and stilt houses, your eyes are filled with visual delight. A little note on the boat pricing: They all seem to be individually owned, so there are price differences. Maybe you can check with a few boat owners before making your decision. We really enjoyed this visit. Tai O Fishing Village has earned a special imprint in our memories.
Beautiful 🤩 view, it gives you the experience of local people, there are small shops and handicraft shop to take away for memories if you are just visiting HK.You can always try their special jumbo fish ball and meat balls, spicy and non spicy . Take a boat ride for $50 ,it’s totally worth it,they will take you around in boat for the perfect view of village,I tried to get on foot by myself but didn’t give me satisfaction of going in boat , they will even take you in the middle of ocean for experience and if you are lucky you will spot dolphins…such a good experience along the way, greenery and best view .🥰🥰🥰
